THE ORIGIN STORY OF LARGE CARDBOARD BOXES
Initial development stage
The first commercial cardboard (non-corrugated) boxes are sometimes attributed to the M. Treverton & Son Company in England in 1817. The cardboard box packaging was made in Germany in the same year.
Scottish-born Robert Gale invented pre-cut cardboard or cardboard boxes in 1890 – mass-producing flat pieces and folding them into boxes. Gair’s invention arose out of an accident: He was a printer and paper bag maker in Brooklyn in the 1870s, and one day when he was printing orders for seed bags, a metal ruler normally used to crumple bags shifted position and cut them. Gale discovered that with a single cut and creasing, he could make prefab cardboard boxes. Applying this idea to the corrugated board was an easy development when the material emerged in the early 20th century.
Development stage again
Cardboard boxes were developed in France around 1840 by silk manufacturers to transport silkworms and their eggs, and the manufacture of cardboard boxes has been a major industry in the region for more than a century. The advent of light flaky cereals has increased the use of cardboard boxes. The first to use cardboard boxes as cereal cartons were Kellogg’s.
Corrugated paper (also known as crepe paper) was patented in England in 1856 and used as a lining for tall hats, but it was not until December 20, 1871, that corrugated cardboard was patented and used as a shipping material. The patent was granted to Albert Jones of New York City for single-sided corrugated cardboard. Jones used corrugated cardboard to package bottles and glass lantern chimneys.
The first machine to produce large quantities of corrugated board was built by G. Smyth in 1874, the same year that Oliver Long improved on Jones’ design and invented a double-sided corrugated board with a liner. They are Large Cardboard Boxes as we know them today. By the early 1900s, wooden boxes and crates were replaced by corrugated shipping cartons.
By 1908, the term “corrugated board” was used in the paper trade.
